Following the 1919 season a young George Halas was contacted by an administrator at the Staley Manufacturing Company (Decatur, Illinois). Halas was asked if he would like to manage and coach the Staley Company football team. Halas accepted and two years later moved the team to Chicago (renaming them the Bears) and the rest is history. Offered here is the Staley Company Journal from December 1919. A couple pages of the journal are devoted to discussing the success of the 1919 football squad, even alluding that members of the Hammond All Stars backfield might have participated in a 1919 game (Halas played for Hammond in 1919). The 40 page journal presents well with the exception of one group of pages being detached (but are still present). This is a very significant item that offers a first hand account of the beginning of one of the most noted American professional sports franchises.
