A remarkably scarce item, this 1911 cabinet from the New York studio of Jones Keyser & Arras features first class hall of famer, Christy Mathewson. Part of a series numbered between 301 and 350 suggests that a complete set would number 50 images; however, the issue is so scarce that the complete checklist is not known. It is also unknown how JKA cabinets were distributed or how many were ever released. What is known is that few have survived since that time. To give an indication of the issue's scarcity, one need not look much further than the population reports. Regardless of the player, a total of 25 JKA cabinets have been graded by SGC and only 3 JKA cabinets have been graded by PSA. A key to the set, this example of Mathewson is one of four graded by SGC (PSA has graded none of him.) Easily one of the most scarce issues of Mathewson, this cabinet features a sepia-toned photograph mounted on the studio's 4-3/4" x 7-1/4" cardboard stock. The back of the cabinet features the studio's name and address. Corner and edge wear on the cardboard stock is responsible for the technical grade, but the silver gelatin photograph is unaffected by this wear. This exceptional piece is destined to be a prized cornerstone. It should be noted that this cabinet is difficult to scan due to its silver gelatin finish. Accordingly, its appearance presents better in person when viewed at angles other than what is typically used for scanning. The third image was taken at an extreme angle to illustrate this fact. Graded SGC 40 / 3 VG.
