As colorful as it is educational, the 1933 – 1934 National Chicle Sky Birds (R136) set was originally intended to be a 48 card set; however, midway through the print run, the set was enlarged. Accordingly the text on the backs of the cards required modifying to denote the increased set size. As a result, cards #25 - 48 may be found with either a “Series of 48” back or the “Series of 144” back. While both back types are shown for reference, the set never reached the denoted 144 card issuance and stopped with card #108. In this near set grouping, cards #35, 37, 38, 39, 41, 44, and 45 feature the difficult “Series of 144” back.

This near set contains cards 1 through 96. Lindbergh is conservatively graded VG due to corner wear. Three of the cards (including von Richthofen) bear a small + mark in the bottom corner of the back. Slightly less than a quarter of the cards have mild to moderate creasing. More than a third of the cards grade at VG and the condition of a more than quarter of them VG-EX or better. Each card is shown in the scans and illustrates the nice eye appeal present across the set.

The key card in the entire set is Charles Lindbergh, who is famed as being the first pilot to complete a non-stop flight from New York to Paris. It also contains Amelia Earhart, the first female to fly across the Atlantic. This card was issued only three years prior to her mysterious disappearance over the Pacific. Other cards of interest include that of motor-propelled airplane inventor Orville Wright and World War II hero, James Doolittle, who was the first pilot to fly and land a plane with a covered cockpit. The Spirit of St. Louis, on display in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum for its use by Lindbergh during his trans-Atlantic flight, also makes an appearance in this set. Finally, the legendary pilot Baron Manfred von Richthofen – better known as “the Red Baron” – rounds out this fascinating and popular set issued by National Chicle in 1933-1934.
