Programs and scorecards often provide glimpses into the past and give insight into the norms of the day. Whether enjoying the advertising for nickel ginger ale or for six custom shirts for $9, one can't help but smile. This scorecard from 1889 features an abbreviated game between the Washington Senators and the Baltimore Orioles. Dummy Hoy, who is famed not only for his fielding arm, but for the fact that he was deaf and mute, led off for the Senators that day. The hall of fame battery featured Hank O'Day and Connie Mack. Interestingly, these two ended up in baseball's hall of fame not because of their pitching and catching, which was on display that day, but for their later umpire and managerial skills.

Printed lineup for the Baltimore Orioles:
Mike Griffin, Tommy Tucker, Billy Shindle, Jack Farrell, Reddy Mack, Chris Fulmer, Joe Sommer, Pat Whitaker/Frank Foreman, Bart Cantz

Printed lineup for the Washington Senators:
Dummy Hoy, Walt Wilmot, John Carney, Al Myers, Pete Sweeney, Connie Mack / Hi Ebright, Jim Donnelly, George Shoch, Hank O'Day / Alex Ferson

Understandably fragile given its age of 127 years, this program was hand-scored on that day. Accordingly, this scorecard, which measures 4-1/4" x 7-3/8" when folded, was well handled in the stands. Pencil marks, mild staining, and moderate wear are present on the corners dictate its condition. Additionally, careful handling is recommended to ensure that the two halves remain attached to one another.
