Vintage photo showing the 1923 Oorang Indians. The Indians team was the creation of Walter Lingo. He bred and sold Oorang Airedale Terriers, and owned one of the most successful dog kennels in the world. The kennels and the team were based in the small town of LaRue, Ohio. The team, led by the legendary Jim Thorpe, was a marketing tool to sell the dogs. The photo is likely period but is second generation; the outlines and features of the players were enhanced either on the negative or an original photo. This was a common practice during that era, as the heavy outlined images transferred better to the newspaper medium (which was the likely use for this photo). The reverse of the photo identifies the "Oorang Indians 1923" and lists all the players in the order which they appear on the photo. The Indians had some colorfully named players including Tomahawk, Little Twig, Bear Behind, Long Time Sleep and Woodchuck. Jim Thorpe, his brother Jack and Pete Calac stand together in the back row. The 6 3/4" x 9 1/4" shows some light toning and spotting, some creases and light crazing in areas.
