The Star Player Candy football cards, even with the discovery of the Dockman Candy box a few years ago, are still surrounded by some mystery. The current checklist stands at 43 and the date of issue is open to debate. Most of the subjects in the football set were active around 1928 (and many are listed as captains of their teams which is also traceable to 1928); however the Red Grange card has him listed as a member of the Illinois squad which Grange was until 1925. The likely scenario is that Grange, who did not play during the 1928 season due to injury, was listed as a member of his alma mater.

Offered here is the 1928 Star Player Candy card of Jim McMillen (misspelled McMillan) who was captain of the Illinois squad (and a consensus All-American) in 1923 and was a perennial All-Pro for the Chicago Bears from 1924 through 1928. McMillen left the gridiron and was a successful professional wrestler until the early 1950's. McMillen is portrayed as a member of the Illinois team rather than as a "Professional" as are a few of the other subjects in the set. Just another item to ponder about this significant early football set.

The McMillen card presents well with a few light creases and a spot of paper loss on the reverse.
