A strong case could be made that today's NFL is the result of the efforts of the NFL's first true leader, Joe Carr. Visionary, entrepreneur and great leader have all been used to describe Carr. The NFL that was born in 1920, initially named the American Professional Football Association, only slightly resembled the billion dollar industry that it is today. Jim Thorpe was named as the first President and the league struggled through its initial season. The owners realized that while Thorpe's name gave the new league some credibility, in order to survive the new league needed powerful leadership and direction. Enter Joe Carr, professional sports franchise owner and promoter, who would successfully take the NFL out of the sandlots and back pages of the sports sections to the big cities and top billings of the sports world. Carr presided over the NFL from 1921 until his death in 1939. Carr was a charter enshrinee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

His autograph/signature is both incredibly rare (typically ranked in the top five most difficult signatures) and highly coveted by collectors.

BST is pleased to offer a truly significant example of a Joe Carr signature. The Carr signature is an endorsement of a 1938 Philadelphia Eagles check also signed by Bert Bell, who would later be the commissioner of the NFL from 1945 to 1959. Both signatures have been authenticated by JSA and the check encapsulated by Beckett.
