Fleishchmann's Bakery cards are exceptionally rare and feature amazing black and white portraits that are seldom seem elsewhere. Whether it be his sweat-drenched brow, steely-eyed glare, or the wrinkles on his face that bear testimony to the hardships of the day, this incredible image of Christy Mathewson is sure to captivate.

In 1918, Mathewson enlisted in the United States Army for World War I. He served overseas as a Captain in the newly formed Chemical Service along with Ty Cobb. While in France, during a training exercise he was accidentally gassed and consequently developed tuberculosis which ultimately killed him prematurely. The back of this card features the text "out with tuberculosis." It is suspected that this writing is period since it implies a then-current condition - from which Matty later died. Mathewson achieved baseball immortality when he was posthumously elected as one of the "first five" to the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown. This D381 Fleischmann's bakery card of the Christian Gentleman is sure to achieve similar status in its new owner's collection.
